Recession is over: Bank of Canada

"[The] challenge is to now make our economy healthy once more."

Yeah, right. Everything's fine, we just need an economic recovery. Not from recession, you understand, but from a bout of economic ill health (see next two items).

What this means is that, as you won't spend, the government will spend extravagantly on your behalf -- you know, on all those projects we couldn't afford in good times. Such pointless spending will make it seem like we're back to normal.

Who will pay your share of the bill for tens of billions for random pork barrel projects? You, obviously.

How will the government make you pay when you're cutting your expenditures because you don't have the money? The government will print the money, which will cause the loonie to fall, not against the US greenback, but against the renmimbi and other Asian currencies, which will mean higher prices for everything. Your standard of living is about to be reduced.

On the upside, with a cheaper dollar, we'll lose manufacturing jobs more slowly and may even gain a few.

Is there a saner way of reviving the economy? Yes, a tarriff, which has the same effect as a devaluation of the currency, but without the idiotic wasteful "stimulus" spending on things we don't need or want.

Why doesn't the Government introduce a tarriff? Out of deference to global capital, which wants to remain free to sell globally, while locating production where labor is cheapest and least protected by health and safety standards and where the environment is protected weakly or not at all. A tarriff negates the advantages of globalization to the owners of capital.

And of course, the government just loves spending your money. And the people who receive the money, love it even more and no doubt make their appreciation known.
